A thick strand of rope, a wayward piece of quarter-inch cord from a fishing net, dangled off the tail of a young sperm whale. To the untrained eye, the line looked harmless—a lasso cinched near the base of the animal's fluke. But the rope was a killer.
Digit, a young sperm whale near the Caribbean Sea nation of Dominica, spent three years with a deadly fishing rope tangled at the base of her fluke before sperm whale scientist Shane Gero spotted her swimming free in 2018. Digit's plight helped spur Gero to work harder to make sure humans and whales coexist.
