Dominica Calypso on Life Support

Dominca Calypso on its Dying Bed

Calypso in Dominica has become an exhibition and contest of maypwee,  beff, insulting Labourites,  bash government and demonize Skerrit.

There is no level of skill or artistry being applied in our calypso songwriting.
The judges must bear the lion's  share of blame for the continuing degradation of the calypso songs being written and sang at calypso competitions. They reward the repetitious, mediocre, unoriginal, lack of provoking ideas with favorable scoring every year.
If Sour Sour,  with his jumpy tempo, was able to string together two coherent lines, while bashing Skerrit he would have already been the calypso king.

Positive, patriotic songs seem to drive the judges to boredom and are always punished. That's why Mighty Omee never finds favor with the judges.

I expect De Healer and Irish Kid to be decapitated at the semi finals but the regurgitation of negativity by Sye, Dice and Bob will surely advance.

Our calypso quality has gotten poorer and poorer every year over the last ten years or so. We need better judges, who understand and appreciate good lyrics, skillful composing and powerful message.

Karessah is a standout,  I must admit. He is on another level, universes above the other calypso simpletons.
