DOMINICA LABOUR PARTY 'RED AND READY',
AND SET FOR A NEW FIVE YEAR TERM IN GOVERNMENT
Few would doubt that the ruling party in Dominica - Dominica Labour Party- will sweep the polls at the next General Election due by March 2020.
NATIONAL RECOVERY
As it stands, Dominica has the made a near miraculous recovery on a more storm-resilient basis since its near total devastation by Category 5 Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
ACCOUNTABILITY FOR AID
The appeal to the international community for financial and logistic help had not fallen on deaf ears as grant aid and concessionary loans have provided the tools to government to return the country to near normalcy well before projected. So often we hear of thievery of aid money but not so in Dominica where every cent has been scrupulously deposited directly into the national Treasury and administered under strict financial regulations inherited from the British in this former colony and Associated State.
RESTORATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE
And it shows. National infrastructure has been restored with the moorings of the many bridges more sensibly set to cater for raging rivers as experienced in the last years with the passage of Tropical storm Erika and Hurricane Maria. One only has to drive around the 289 square mile mountainous island with its fair share of free flowing 365 rivers to realize the extent of the recovery. Electricity and water has long been restored to every community in Dominica and the famous Waitakubuli Nature Trail that traverses the volcanic mountains has been restored.
TOURISM
Dominica had a huge and successful cruise ship season for the 2018/19 northern winter season and a number of premier Five star and couture hotel and spa resorts are set to be open later this year in order to offer visitors the Jurassic Park Natural Adventure in world class comfort with sandy beaches and beautiful sunny conditions. The Nature Isle of the Caribbean is like none other.
AGRICULTURE REHABILITATION
Agriculture is back into full gear of production, in food stuff, and not the cannabis stuff the Parliamentary Opposition is advocating as a pillar of recovery.
HOUSING
A renaissance is taking place in public sector housing with the construction of virtual villages from the flagship Bellevue Chopin Village up in the 'Dominica Alps' to the equality climate resilient Castle Bruce, Laplaine and Georgetown districts. In all over 5000 brand new units financed by funding from the very successful Citizenship by Investment program of the Government of Dominica.
PUBLIC HEALTH
Very shortly the first phase of the new Dominica/China Friendship Hospital will be opened. This will see a First World Public Heath Care institution opened to replace the former Princess Margaret Hospital of revered memory.
EDUCATION
The reopening of the badly damaged State College, a facility like no other in the Caribbean, has crowned a full recovery, but for two secondary schools, on island. Government has since announced that its offerings are now tuition-free.
INVESTMENT
There are great investment opportunities and with the commissioning of the Geo-Thermal Electricity Generation Plant later in the year the cost of energy is set to make Dominica attractive for industry. Growth in GDP is projected at 9% in 2019 and the debt to GDP ratio is a manageable 57%.
Democracy is alive in this Caricom island State and international observers have been certifying elections as free and fair.
LEADERSHIP
Much of this positive state of affairs is attributable to the popular Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who while relatively young is the second longest serving current Prime Minister in the region. His accessibility to all, and especially to the needy and poor has set him
aside from all others. I predict a late year poll and an increased majority in the local legislature for his Dominica Labour Party that I am proud to support.
