On Sunday June 30th, labourites in Antigua showed up in large numbers to attend a town hall hosted by the Dominica Labour Party.
The speakers at the event were Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister for Justice and National Security, Rayburn Blackmoore, Dr. Irving McIntyre, DLP candidate for the Roseau Valley constituency and four female candidates in the 2019 upcoming general elections.Full Story by [Truth & Theory]
The candidates who spoke at the town hall were educators, Octavia ‘Teacher Bonnie’ Alfred candidate for the Castle Bruce Constituency and Gretta Roberts, the candidate for Morne Jaune/Riviere Cyrique. Dr. Adis King, DLP candidate for the St. Joseph constituency and businesswoman and philanthropist, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, wife of Roosevelt Skerrit and DLP candidate for the Roseau Central constituency were also in attendance.
It was evident that Mrs. Skerrit was the star of the rally with such a warm welcome from the moment she touched down at V.C. Bird international airport and at the rally with many chanting “We love you Melissa” and “Today is your day”.
She disclosed at the rally that she was content to support the prime minister as his wife while running her businesses and her charitable foundation, however when she witnessed the ravages of Hurricane Maria and `her husband’s determination to build back better, she simply could not sit aside and do nothing.
Mrs. Skerrit further elaborated on her close and personal connection to the people of Roseau. She was raised in the city, and her family is well known not only in Roseau but is a household name all over the island. Her father is Valantine Poponne who was recently awarded with the Sisserou Award of Honour in recognition of his decades-long outstanding contribution to public life.
Mrs. Skerrit eloquently outlined her reasons for running for elections. As a God-fearing woman, she explained that she felt there was a divine calling to represent the people.
Mrs. Skerrit stated that she was able to gain new supporters not only because of the DLP candidacy but because of her reputation in Roseau central.
Mrs. Skerrit teased that her campaign will be officially launched in the coming weeks and she would at that time expand on her vision for Roseau differentiating between the needs of the residents and plans for catapulting Roseau as an economic hub.
She has a vision for Roseau as the capital city of Dominica with the intention to transform Roseau into a jewel of the Caribbean which would entice tourists from Martinique and Guadeloupe to our shores by highlighting our culture, cuisine and economic prospects. She recognized that there is quite a huge workload ahead but she is not one to shy away from such a daunting task.
I look forward to her official campaign launch as Mrs. Skerrit has made quite an impression with her introduction into Dominican politics. This media darling emphatically stated that she means business and has vowed to be the long-lost voice of the people of Roseau by championing the causes of women and children. She is a force to be reckoned with and should not be underestimated.
