International World Indigenous Peoples Day

International World Indigenous Peoples Day

Our ancestors, I am sure are very elated to know that Kalinago Culture is still alive in the 21st century. That we can co-exist almost seamlessly in Waitikubuli.

On August 9th, 2020 we joined the rest of our sister tribes to celebrate International World Indigenous Peoples Day. And for the hundreds that attended, it was truly a life-changing experience. Not only was our culture on display, but patrons were able to fully immerse in our traditions and customs.

The sounds of the drums were uplifting, the songs that were sang touched our very souls; the dances were exhilarating; the foods were mouth-watering and speeches that were shared left a mark etched on the minds of listeners.

International World Indigenous Peoples Day was an opportunity to rekindle the spiritual fire in all of us. A time for reflection, especially given the turning of the tides in the dawn of a new decade. This year’s theme focused on COVID-19 and the Resilience of Indigenous people. We chose to also recognize the significance of the Kalinago Language and how we should seek to regain a language that was once thought to be lost.

The event was graced with the presence of my fellow Cabinet colleagues. Hon. Ian Douglas, Hon. Kent Edwards, Hon. Roselyn Paul and Hon. Adis King and other notable public officials.

I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Kalinago Events Committee, The Kalinago Chief and Council, the Kalinago Barana Aute management and staff, the Karifuna and Karina Cultural Groups, Petite Savanne Cultural Group and everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure that we had a historic moment.

Thank You.
Our Ancestors are Watching.

Hon. Cozier Frederick
