WoodfordHill Seamoss Group – Update #1

WoodfordHill Seamoss Group – Update #1

Greetings All. The newly formed WoodfordHill Seamoss Group is made up primarily of single mothers and led by Mr. Wilson Honore. There are two (2) divers with the team.

With support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and my Ministry, Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and National Food Security, the women are being trained in preparation and planting of the Seamoss. They will be paid a stipend during training. Within six (6) weeks of planting, Seamoss can be harvested.

These single mothers are being empowered to find their place in a very lucrative business/ Industry.

Seamoss drink is becoming increasingly popular on the local market and I am aware that exports to regional and international markets are rising steadily.

Wet Seamoss is sold for as much as XCD25.00 per pound and when dried, XCD80.00 per pound. A small portion of Seamoss however can produce much beverage. The fact is, the Seamoss business, whether raw or processed is profitable!

The best news is that, we already have secured the commitment of John Robin Benjo's Seamoss & Agro Processing Co Ltd to purchase all the Seamoss from this group. This means guaranteed income for the single mothers! Many thanks to Mr. Robin.

This is just one example of the opportunities within the 'Blue Economy'.

I will continue to support to the group and work with them towards building a successful, sustainable and profitable business in Woodfordhill.

Great things are happening in the Wesley Constituency. Stay tuned!
