LAST BUILDING STANDING

Italian artist Agostino Brunias arrived in Dominica in June 1765 as personal artist to Sir William Young, Commissioner for the Sale of Lands and later Governor of Dominica.

Brunias painted people and scenes in Barbados, St. Vincent, St. Kitts and Dominica where he lived until his death in 1796. Here is one of his scenes of the old Roseau marketplace. On the left-hand side of the painting is a house on wooden pillars that is still standing today.

Compare the painting to this photo taken today from almost the same spot where Brunias sat to paint the picture c1785. The house pillars still stand on the left hand side, although the open market place is partially covered over and is obscured by parked buses.
