Numbers Never Lie:
Many people have been boxing me to look at the Antigua and Barbuda election numbers, but truthfully, this was one election I never gave much energy to because, in my opinion, Antigua remains “Bird Country.”
For decades, the political culture of Antigua and Barbuda has largely revolved around the Bird political dynasty and influence. Even when a Bird is not directly in office, the Bird legacy still shapes the direction of leadership and political loyalty on the ground.
But when you study the 2026 results carefully, one thing becomes crystal clear:
This election was won long before Election Day.
The opposition entered the race already weakened by internal fighting, confusion, division, and lack of direction. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gaston Browne strategically dismantled the opposition over time by exposing their weaknesses while strengthening his own political machine.
That is politics.
Not emotion.
Not Facebook noise.
Strategy.
And one of the biggest miscalculations by the opposition was believing that U.S. visa sanctions and international pressure surrounding the CIP program would become the winning issue.
It failed badly.
Why?
Because the average man and woman on the street were more concerned about survival, jobs, infrastructure, stability, and sovereignty than foreign pressure or diplomatic headlines.
Many Caribbean people still believe outsiders should not dictate to sovereign nations how to run their affairs. The opposition misread the mood of the people completely.
Now look at the numbers carefully:
2018 Election
Registered Voters: 51,258
Votes Cast: 39,220
Turnout: 76.51%
2023 Election
Registered Voters: 60,916
Votes Cast: 42,849
Turnout: 70.34%
2026 Election
Registered Voters: 61,811
Votes Cast: 39,515
Turnout: 63.93%
The trend tells a serious story:
The voter list increased significantly over the years.
But turnout steadily declined.
Despite all the noise, controversy, and attacks, the opposition could not energize enough people to create a national wave for change.
That is a major political warning sign.
You cannot win elections disconnected from the realities and emotions of ordinary people.
Caribbean politics is not won on social media alone.
It is won in communities.
It is won through organization.
It is won through connection.
It is won through trust.
And whether people love him or hate him, Gaston Browne understood the battlefield better than his opponents.
Politics is chess, not checkers.
